Concert Review & Setlists: Soundgarden And Nine Inch Nails At Shoreline Amphitheatre In Mountain View

1994 was a banner year for both Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails. The two bands topped the charts with their multi-platinum released Superunknown and The Downward Spiral. Two decades later, they proved in their co-headining tour stop at Mountain View’s Shoreline Amphitheatre that they still have what it take to captivate a crowd.

Soundgarden kick off the evening with “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” from 1991’s Badmotorfinger and proceeded to rattle of fan favorites from their illustrious career like “Spoonman,” “Outshined,” “Jesus Christ Pose,” “Fell on Black Days,” “Black Hole Sun,” and more. The band, who reformed in 2010 after an extended hiatus, sounded tight and loud with Chris Cornell’s soaring vocals sounding nothing like his 50 years.

Soundgarden Setlist:

“Searching With My Good Eye Closed”
“Spoonman”
“Flower”
“Outshined”
“Jesus Christ Pose”
“The Day I Tried to Live”
“My Wave”
“Superunknown”
“Fell on Black Days”
“A Thousand Days Before”
“Rusty Cage”
“Black Hole Sun”
“Beyond the Wheel”

The stage was bare except for a microphone and sequencer when without notice Trent Reznor sprinted onto stage and began playing “Copy of A” from 2013 Hesitation Marks. As the song progress the rest of Nine Inch Nails began slowly emerging from the wings until the song was crashing with NIN particular controlled chaos. The opener was just a taste of Reznor and Nine Inch Nails putting on a master class on how to use lighting, video, and staging to supplement the music. Reznor played behind screens, solo on stage, and dashed frenzied to flood and strobe lighting throughout the set. The hour plus set included raucous sing-a-long to the NIN classics “Closer,” “Head Like A Hole,” “Wish,” and more. The closer and arguably the highlight of the set was 1994’s “Hurt.” Reznor stripped down the song to it’s very most intimate while silhouetted by black and white video and photos of events, atrocities, and a giant slithering snake head. Once the song finished with its cacophonous final bar the 10,000 plus crowd was completely enraptured.

Side Note: There were a couple of very surreal moments with the crowd — mostly in the mid-30s — like when most all sang along to “Wish” by screaming “fist f**K” at the top of their lungs.

Nine Inch Nails Setlist:

“Copy of A”
“Sanctified”
“Came Back Haunted”
